See detailsA small village with older wood and a lot of weather exposure
Cross Plains is about 15 miles west of Madison, roughly 25 minutes. The village sits at the edge of the Driftless Area, and homes on the ridges and valley walls take noticeably more wind exposure than sheltered Madison lots. Combined with a housing stock that skews older and wood-sided, that makes exterior prep here scrape-heavy and worth doing properly.
Cross Plains is where Dane County starts turning into the Driftless. The terrain matters for painting: houses on exposed ridges take wind-driven rain from directions that a sheltered Madison lot never sees, and that shows up as accelerated failure on whichever elevation catches the weather.
The housing skews older than the eastern Dane County suburbs, with more painted wood and more pre-1978 construction. That means lead-safe handling and honest scrape assessments. It is good work on good houses and it deserves to be done at the right pace.
Properties on the ridges around Cross Plains take significantly more wind exposure than valley lots. It is common for one elevation to need repainting years before the other three, and repainting just that side is often the right call.

No, and on an exposed Cross Plains property you often should not. Wind-driven rain hits one or two elevations disproportionately, and those fail years before the others. Repainting the weather side on its own shorter cycle costs less and keeps the whole house protected. The tradeoff is a slight color difference as the older sides fade, which we will explain honestly before you decide.
Yes. Detached garages, sheds, and barns are common here and they usually go longer between coats than the house does. They price by surface area and access, and tall gable ends need real staging.
