The number nobody checks: dew point
Every exterior coating has a minimum application temperature, usually 35°F or 50°F depending on the product, and homeowners reasonably assume that means the daytime high. It does not. It means the surface temperature, for the entire cure window, which extends hours past when the painter packs up.
The related trap is dew point. When a surface cools to within about five degrees of the dew point, moisture condenses on it. If that happens while a coat is still curing, the film is compromised. It will look perfect. It will fail early, usually two seasons later, and the failure will look exactly like ordinary weathering.
Why Wisconsin is genuinely hard on exterior paint
A Madison exterior goes through roughly a 120-degree annual temperature swing, from below zero in January to the mid-90s in July. Every material on the house expands and contracts through that range, and the coating has to move with it without cracking.
Worse, we get freeze-thaw cycling. Water absorbs into wood in the fall, then freezes and expands, then thaws, then freezes again, dozens of times over a winter. Ice is a crowbar operating at a microscopic scale, and it is what actually lifts paint off siding. This is why paint fails from behind, not from the front, and why prep and priming matter more here than they do in a mild climate.
Your south and west walls will fail first
Predictably and every time. The south elevation takes the most ultraviolet load across the year, and the west takes intense late-afternoon summer sun. Those two sides commonly need repainting three to five years before the north and east.
Which raises an option most contractors will not offer you: repaint only the failing elevations, on their own shorter cycle. It costs substantially less, it keeps the house protected, and the tradeoff is a slight color difference as the older sides fade. On an exposed property in Cross Plains or on a lakefront lot in McFarland, this is often the smarter spend and we will say so.
What to do in the off-season
- Book September in March. It is the best month and it fills first.
- Wash the house in late April, right after the wet spring, before growth sets in for the summer.
- Walk the south and west walls in early spring and look for lifting edges and open caulk joints.
- Check the bottom edges of engineered siding. Water gets in at cut edges, and it is invisible until a board swells.
- Do interior work in January and February. Better scheduling, same crews, same price.
Can you paint in cold weather at all?
There are coatings rated down to 35°F, and they are genuinely useful for extending the season by a couple of weeks at each end. They are not a license to paint in November. The rating assumes the surface stays above that temperature through the full cure, which in late Wisconsin autumn it will not overnight.
If someone offers to paint your exterior in November because they have a slow schedule, the honest reading is that they have a slow schedule.
